According to Tbilisi City Hall, in connection with the ongoing rehabilitation works on Rustaveli Avenue, the Tbilisi municipality has developed a temporary traffic scheme, which will come into effect on September 1. Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze spoke in a video address released today about the importance of the alternative traffic scheme on the streets surrounding the capital’s main avenue.
Under the new scheme, two-way traffic will be introduced on several streets. Two main routes have also been developed to provide access to Tbilisi Classical Gymnasium.
As Kakha Kaladze noted, the rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue will be the best project that everyone will be proud of, but until then, residents of the capital need to be patient with the inconvenience caused by the works.
“A few days ago, I spoke about how important the implementation of this project is for our city. I also spoke about the importance of Rustaveli Avenue - its past, present and future, how difficult its current condition is, and what problems exist in terms of underground infrastructure. Naturally, the first thing being done is the replacement of underground utilities, which causes a great deal of inconvenience, particularly in terms of traffic, as well as noise and dust that bother local residents. However, work on this scale is absolutely impossible to carry out in any other way. Therefore, my request was that we all need to be patient until the end of November. And believe me, once the rehabilitation is completed, this will be the best project, and we will all be proud of the work that has been done,” Kaladze said.
According to him, information about the temporary traffic scheme is particularly important for drivers. Therefore, in addition to social media platforms, the video explaining the changes will also be broadcast on television so that the general public has comprehensive information about the new arrangements.
As for the temporary traffic scheme, starting September 1, two-way traffic will be permitted on Pavle Ingorokva Street. Two-way traffic will also be allowed on a section of April 9 Street, between its intersections with Ingorokva Street and Zurab Zhvania Street. Two-way traffic will be possible on a certain section of Zhvania Street, from the intersection with April 9 Street to the intersection with Zakaria Chichinadze Street, while traffic will remain one-way up to Besiki Street.
In addition, the section of Besiki Street between its intersections with Zhvania Street and Shevchenko Street will be one-way. Shevchenko Street will also have one-way traffic, from Besiki Street toward Chichinadze Street. Traffic on Lermontov Street will remain one-way, but in the opposite direction: drivers will be able to reach Shalva Dadiani Street from Kikodze and Machabeli streets via Lermontov Street.
Tbilisi Classical Gymnasium will be accessible via two main routes. Specifically, drivers will be able to travel from Freedom Square via Leonidze and Ingorokva streets to April 9 Street, then turn left onto Zhvania Street and continue toward Besiki and Shevchenko streets. Alternatively, drivers coming from Chonkadze Street or Polikarp Kakabadze Street will proceed to Mtatsminda Street and, via Arsena Street, connect to Besiki and Shevchenko streets.
From Shevchenko Street, drivers will be able to turn left and return via Zhvania, April 9 and Ingorokva streets, from where they can connect via Leonidze and Kikodze streets to Lermontov and Dadiani streets, as well as Freedom Square. Access to the upper streets of Mtatsminda will be permitted from April 9 Street via Arsena Street.
