"A person cannot be elected chairman of the Central Election Commission for 6 months and be constantly in tension so as not to lose the support of any political team," First Vice-Speaker of Parliament Gia Volski told reporters.
He responded to the statement of CEC Chairman Giorgi Kalandarishvili and noted that one of the determinants of independence is the election of a CEC chairman for a long term.
Asked if they had consultations within the team regarding possible changes in the law, Volski said they had consultations on all issues, including this one.
"We must have a stability mechanism and this stability is significantly conditioned by the Central Election Commission. We have to have a mechanism, 2/3 or 50%, by which we will be able to have a situation in the CEC, when its chairman will not depend on any party or its taste. In case of 6 months, he/she will be under some political pressure. If you have a candidate who will be elected by mutual trust, present him/her and let’s discuss”, said Volski.
CEC Chairman Giorgi Kalandarishvili spoke about the importance of electing a CEC chairman for a long term on PalitraNews TV, noting that it will ensure the development of the institution, stability and independence. In this context, he shared the position of the ruling team that the election legislation should be revised and norms should be enacted that will enable the election of the CEC chairperson for a 5-year term. According to Kalandarishvili, the mechanism introduced under the agreement of Charles Michel, in particular, the component of electing a CEC chairperson for 6 months, was a temporary measure for the transition period.
